Does Michigan No-Fault Insurance Cover Medical Transportation After a Car Accident?

By CuraTransit Team — non-emergency medical transportation specialists in Metro Detroit

Yes — in many cases. Michigan no-fault personal injury protection (PIP) covers allowable expenses for an injured person's care and recovery, and the State of Michigan lists transportation to and from medical appointments among PIP benefits. How much is covered depends on your PIP medical coverage level, your claim status and benefit verification.

After a car accident, getting to doctor visits, physical therapy and rehab is part of recovering — but injuries often make it impossible to drive. In Michigan, the no-fault auto insurance system was designed with exactly this in mind.

This article is general information, not legal advice. For questions about your specific claim, talk to your insurer or a Michigan auto-accident attorney.

The short answer

Michigan's no-fault law requires personal injury protection (PIP) benefits to pay allowable expenses — reasonable charges for products, services and accommodations reasonably necessary for an injured person's care, recovery or rehabilitation. The State of Michigan's own auto insurance FAQ lists "transportation to and from medical appointments" among PIP benefits (State of Michigan).

That means rides to accident-related treatment — including wheelchair van transportation when your injuries require it — are commonly covered, subject to your coverage level, your claim's status and benefit verification.

How the 2019 reform changed PIP coverage

Michigan reformed its no-fault law in 2019. For policies issued or renewed after July 1, 2020, drivers choose a PIP medical coverage level. According to the State of Michigan's guide to choosing PIP medical coverage, the options are:

PIP medical optionWho can choose it
UnlimitedAny driver
$500,000 per person per accidentAny driver
$250,000 per person per accidentAny driver
$250,000 with exclusionsRequires qualified health coverage for excluded people
$50,000Limited option with eligibility conditions
No PIP medical (opt out)Limited option with eligibility conditions

Your coverage level matters because transportation, treatment and other allowable expenses all draw from the same PIP medical limit. Since July 2021, many medical providers are also paid under the no-fault fee schedule, which is one reason insurers verify benefits before approving recurring services.

What if I don't have auto insurance? The MACP

If you were injured in a Michigan auto accident and no auto insurance policy applies to you, you may be able to claim no-fault benefits through the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP), which assigns an insurer to handle the claim. CuraTransit accepts eligible MACP cases for accident-related transportation, subject to claim assignment and benefit verification. Our MACP medical transportation guide explains the process step by step.

Important deadlines

  • One year to apply. Generally, you must give notice or file an application for no-fault benefits with the insurer within one year of the accident (MCL 500.3145).
  • 30-day payment rule. Benefits are generally overdue if not paid within 30 days after the insurer receives reasonable proof of the loss (MCL 500.3142).
  • One-year-back rule. There are also time limits on recovering specific expenses, so submit transportation bills promptly.

If your claim is delayed or denied, a Michigan no-fault attorney can explain your options.

How to set up no-fault medical transportation

  1. Open your claim with your auto insurer (or apply through the MACP) and get a claim number.
  2. Ask your adjuster about transportation benefits and any pre-approval requirements.
  3. Call a transportation provider that works with no-fault claims. Have ready:
    • Insurer name and claim number
    • Adjuster or nurse case manager contact information
    • Date of the accident
    • Your treatment schedule (clinics, days and times)
    • Mobility needs (walking, walker or wheelchair)
  4. Keep records of every trip and every appointment.

At CuraTransit, we coordinate with your insurer or MACP-assigned carrier to verify transportation benefits, then schedule your rides — one-time or recurring — to physical therapy, chiropractic, specialists, imaging and rehab across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties. Mileage reimbursement vs. a transportation provider

Some injured people are driven by family and request mileage reimbursement from the insurer. That works when a family member is available. When no one can drive you — or you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle — a professional NEMT provider bills the insurer directly for approved trips, so you don't have to rely on favors to stay on your treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does no-fault pay for Uber or taxi rides to the doctor?

Transportation to accident-related medical care is a PIP benefit, but insurers decide whether a specific expense is reasonable and necessary. Ask your adjuster before relying on rideshare, and keep receipts.

Can my attorney or case manager book rides for me?

Yes. Law-firm staff and nurse case managers can schedule rides on a client's behalf with the claim information.

What happens if my PIP medical benefits run out?

Once your PIP medical limit is exhausted, the insurer stops paying for allowable expenses. Other health coverage may apply to your treatment, and rides can continue as private pay. Ask us about private-pay medical transportation.

Does CuraTransit bill the insurance company directly?

For claims we have verified with the insurer, we coordinate billing with the insurer. If coverage is pending or denied, we discuss options with you before scheduling.
