MACP Medical Transportation in Michigan: Rides to Treatment When You Have No Auto Insurance

By CuraTransit Team — non-emergency medical transportation specialists in Metro Detroit

If you were hurt in a Michigan car accident and no auto insurance policy applies to you, the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP) may pay no-fault benefits — including transportation to accident-related medical care. Here's how MACP works, what to have ready, and how to set up rides in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.

A car accident can leave you needing weeks or months of doctor visits, physical therapy and rehab — and unable to drive to any of them. If you had your own auto policy, your insurer's personal injury protection (PIP) would usually handle transportation to accident-related care. But what if no auto insurance policy applies to you at all?

That is exactly what the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP) is for. This guide explains how MACP works for medical transportation and how CuraTransit helps MACP claimants in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties get to treatment.

This article is general information, not legal advice. For questions about your eligibility or a denied claim, talk to a Michigan auto-accident attorney.

The short answer

The Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP) provides Michigan no-fault benefits to eligible people injured in a motor vehicle accident when no auto insurance policy applies to them. The plan, administered by the Michigan Automobile Insurance Placement Facility, assigns an insurer to handle the claim. Once a claim is assigned and benefits are verified, reasonably necessary transportation to accident-related medical treatment can be paid as an allowable expense. CuraTransit accepts eligible MACP cases and coordinates billing with the assigned insurer.

Who may qualify for MACP benefits?

MACP is a safety net, so eligibility depends on whether any other policy applies first. People who commonly turn to MACP include:

  • Pedestrians and bicyclists hit by a vehicle, who have no auto policy in their household
  • Passengers in a vehicle when no policy covers them or their household
  • People hurt in a crash where the at-fault vehicle was uninsured and no household policy applies

Generally, a person who was driving their own uninsured vehicle is not eligible. A legal guide from Michigan Auto Law summarizes the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan rules in more detail.

How MACP medical transportation works, step by step

  1. Apply to the MACP for no-fault benefits. Under Michigan law, the application generally must be filed within one year of the accident.
  2. Wait for assignment. The MACP assigns your claim to a servicing insurer and you receive a claim number and adjuster contact.
  3. Call CuraTransit at 248-320-9092 with:
    • The assigned insurer's name and your claim number
    • The adjuster or case manager name and phone
    • The date of the accident
    • Your treatment schedule — clinics, days and times
    • Whether you walk or need a wheelchair-accessible van
  4. Benefit verification. We confirm transportation benefits with the assigned insurer before your first ride.
  5. Rides are scheduled — one-time or recurring — to physical therapy, chiropractic, specialists, imaging and rehab across Metro Detroit.
  6. Billing is coordinated with the assigned insurer for approved trips.

What MACP transportation can cover

Michigan's no-fault law treats reasonably necessary charges for an injured person's care, recovery and rehabilitation as allowable expenses, and the State of Michigan lists transportation to and from medical appointments among PIP benefits (State of Michigan auto insurance FAQ). For MACP claims, coverage is limited — for most recent accidents PIP medical benefits through the MACP are capped — and every trip must relate to accident treatment. That's why we always verify benefits first.

Trip typeUsually eligible under an approved claim?
Physical and occupational therapy visitsYes, when accident-related
Chiropractic and pain-management visitsYes, when accident-related and approved
Orthopedic, neurology and other specialist visitsYes, when accident-related
Imaging (MRI, CT, X-ray) ordered for accident injuriesYes
Unrelated personal tripsNo — these are private pay

Wheelchair or ambulatory: which ride do MACP patients need?

Many accident patients start in a wheelchair and move to a walker or cane as they recover. CuraTransit provides both:

When your mobility changes, just tell dispatch — we update the vehicle type for the rest of your schedule.

Tips to keep your MACP rides on track

  • Apply early. Don't wait on the one-year deadline; transportation can't be verified until a claim is assigned.
  • Keep your treatment calendar current. Send schedule changes to us and your adjuster.
  • Save trip confirmations. Records help if the insurer asks about a specific date.
  • Ask your attorney or case manager to book for you if that's easier — we work with law-firm staff and nurse case managers every week.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan pay for rides to physical therapy?

Transportation to accident-related treatment such as physical therapy can be paid as an allowable expense under an approved MACP claim, after the assigned insurer verifies benefits. CuraTransit accepts eligible MACP cases.

How long do I have to apply to the MACP?

Generally, an application for MACP benefits must be filed within one year of the accident. Check with an attorney if you are close to the deadline.

Can I use CuraTransit before my MACP claim is assigned?

Rides can't be billed to the MACP until a claim is assigned and benefits are verified. If you need a ride sooner, we can schedule it as private pay and explain your options.

Does CuraTransit provide wheelchair vans for MACP patients?

Yes. CuraTransit provides wheelchair-accessible van and ambulatory rides for eligible MACP patients across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.

What is the difference between no-fault PIP and MACP?

PIP benefits are normally paid by the injured person's own (or a household member's) auto insurer. The MACP steps in when no policy applies and assigns an insurer to pay benefits. Read our guide to Michigan no-fault medical transportation.
